NYers: Act Now to Stop Health Insurance Discrimination Against People with Autism

2008-10-30 06:32:09

Fed up with paying insurance premiums but not getting any coverage for medical
care and therapy needed by a family member on the spectrum? Help us stop this
gross injustice. Our kids are sick and they need the health care we are already
paying for.
Legislation is pending in the Albany that would prohibit discrimination
against people on the autistim spectrum by health insurance companies. A 699
introduced by Assemblymember Audrey Pheffer of Queens and S784 introduced
Senator Charles Fuschillo of Nassau need your support.
An unprecedented coalition of every organization working on autism issues in
the State of New York has formed to get this legislation passed. And we need
your help. We are up against a trillion dollar industry. We need a flood of
emails, faxes, phone calls, letters and office visits pouring into elected
officials.
Every single communication is important. Sometimes it only takes one phone
call, or one story of desperately needed ABA denied, to get a legislator's
support. We don't have lobbyists and trainloads of cash like our opposition. So
we need you. The first thing you can do is click on the link below which will
take you to the ACHAMP website where you can send an emails directly to the key
elected officails and your own State Senator and Representative.
And stay alert for further needed actioon as the legislative session develops.

About LA FEAT
LA FEAT is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. We are a group of
parents of children with autism dedicated to helping other parents
and families of children with autism. LA FEAT believes that newly
diagnosed children with autism should receive intensive, quality,
effective treatment that is based in research. LA FEAT's mission is
to provide education to families and the community on effective
autism treatments, and to provide support to families seeking
effective treatments for their children on the autism spectrum.
Applied Behavior Analysis has been proven effective through
published, long-term, replicated research. If appropriate, we
believe that children with autism should start a quality, intensive
ABA program as soon after diagnosis as possible. In one landmark
study (Lovaas, 1987), nearly half (47%) of young children with
autism treated by an intensive ABA program achieved normal
intellectual and educational functioning by the end of first grade.
Although not every child in an ABA program will achieve a "best
outcome" result of normal functioning levels in all areas, nearly
all autistic children benefit from early, intensive ABA programs.

Small Social Groups

2008-10-27 20:29:44

Hello Everyone,
I've lived in Miami,Florida for 2 years now and there
seems to be a need for small social groups with typical children(2-3).
We also need therapists. I have done some research and the groups that
are out there are so expensive. The families are already paying for
therapy in their home at a high rate.
How does one begin a small group?
Does anybody have any ideas?
Where do you go legally?
How do you find a space?

Info/Journal Articles on VB

2008-10-27 04:43:34

I am currently enrolled in a Educational Psychology college class
(earning my degree in psychology and special education) and I am
doing a 10 page paper on the effectiveness of VB on the social and
academic skills of children with ASD's. In addition to doing
classroom observation in the Brick Township VB school for ASD
children ages 3-21 and using my own little VB success story, my son
Nicholas, I need journal articles and information I can use to back
up my findings. I know it works, you all know it works, but my
professor wants some research and articles to substantiate that it
works.
Does anyone have any websites or journal articles that you can send
me or refer me to as proof of my hypothesis? (Children with Autism
that are afforded a verbal behavior program in a self contained
classroom environment go on to succeed both academically and
socially)
Any info you can send me would be appreciated.
Thanks so much!!!!!

Need HELP please with "screamer"

2008-10-27 01:31:48

Hello Everyone,
I'm at my wit's end - literally. My son is 5.5 yrs. old and a
screamer - BIG TIME. He LOVES to scream. Constantly screaming
lately. He screams at everyone and everything all the time. Part
of it I know is that he's frustrated - he's profoundly apraxic and
his expressive speech is that of a 2 yr. olds. His receptive is age-
appropriate. He reads and writes and understands what he reads,
etc... He's otherwise very high functioning.
We've tried all kinds of intensive therapies, all kinds of "behavior
plans" - even aversives. He attends a very well known and respected
full-time ABA program (Eden in NJ). Despite all this "expert" help -
the screaming continues. It's not a stim either. It's his way of
being aggressive - he knows it totally aggravates and unnerves
people around him (he's EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY loud and shrill).
We've done it all with him - VB, Lovaas, you name it, he's had it.
We've had consultants and therapists from Alpine and Douglas and
still nobody has been able to get rid of the infernal screaming.
I swear some days I get so depressed about it I literally would kill
myself if I had the nerve. It sounds horrible but you only have to
be around him when he's in "scream fest" mode to literally want to
run yourself screaming from the room.
He yells at everything lately. Everything. If the computer is too
slow - boom - yelling and screaming at decibels you wouldn't believe
could come out of a 5 yr. old's body. If you deny him something or
place a demand on him - boom - off he goes. He screams constantly
it seems. He can sign, uses PECS, and has enough words to mand for
hundreds of items. He's very independent and has excellent self-
help skills. He's academically gifted.
This screaming intensifies periodically. We've tried meds - but
nothing seems to help.
I'm divorced and care for him on my own. A week like this (they're
off from school) is torture. I had a mom over today - also with an
autistic daughter. She's a tantrummer too, and can get loud. My
son was undergoing some "compliance training" procedures and this
woman couldn't take it anymore herself and left. She told me she'd
never heard the likes of it and her own kid is no wallflower.
His teacher has started wearing ear plugs - that's how bad he is.
This is causing me huge problems as we live in an apartment and my
neighbors have petitioned my landlord to evict us because of his
yelling and carrying on.
If anybody has any ideas, please help. I've spent thousands of
dollars and many hours trying to extinguish this behavior and nobody
has been able to.
Right now they are trying an "aversive" behavior plan our consultant
came up with. When he screams we quickly wipe his mouth with a baby
wipe. Big woops. He could care less - he doesn't find it aversive
in the least. Another failure.
Honestly, today he's literally spent the entire day yelling or
screaming. If you ignore him - he just goes on hour after hour
after hour. Nothing's wrong - he's got no pains and he's not ill.
He'll watch tv or play on his computer - all the while screaming his
head off. He does it for attention - I mean for everything
literally.
I can't take much more of this. He's driving me insane. I can't
take him ANYWHERE lately. I can't get simple errands done. I'm
literally a prisoner in my own home when he's not at school. At
home, I can't shower, cook, clean - nothing. If he wants my
attention, he starts his symphony. Since I ignore him, I get to
spend pretty much every waking hour with him screaming his head
off. Funny thing is that he's compliant to demands. He does
whatever you ask him to, but screams the entire time. He'll even
scream with his mouth "closed".
The only reason I haven't checked myself into the local psych ward
is that I know nobody in my family would take care of him. They
can't handle the screaming.
Help. I'm at the point of wanting to just die. If this is him at
5, what will he be like when he's 15 or 20? A really smart,
autistic savant that screams constantly?
I'm sick to death of all these experts - none of them has been able
to help us with this. If anything, after 5 months at Eden - his
behavior is WORSE. Way worse. His language has also regressed.

Pay sources for Behavior Analysts

2008-10-27 00:07:24

Hello,
I am working with a child recently diagnosed with autism. He would benefit
greatly from a behavior analyst and the family is seeking information
regarding pay sources. We live in Mississippi. Does anyone know about
Medicaid reimbursement, school willingness to pay (this probably varies from
district to district) or otherwise? Any input, advice or guidance would be
much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Melissa

Newbie intro

2008-10-26 08:23:03

Hi all. I have a boy with autism who will be four next month.
After a Vince Carbone workshop here in Phoenix, I got all fired up
about AVB and hired a BCBA, Leslie Morrison of Sedona, AZ, to help
get a home program going.
We've got three fantastic ABA habilitators who my son was beginning
to dislike because they took him upstairs, away from his two
favorite things (TV and computer) to sit at a table and do Lovaas-
style ABA. We'd been doing traditional ABA since Johnny's diagnosis
in May 2004 and it had helped, but he was starting to really resist
and have meltdowns of protest when his habilitators arrived.
We've only had two six-hour consultations with our BCBA so far and
things have really changed. She identified three top motivators to
become his first mands: "movie" (his Baby Einstein DVDs), "computer"
(playhousedisney.com), and "milk" (his bottle of hazelnut milk).
She taught him two of these signs in one day and three days later,
we had him signing correctly for all three! On her second visit,
four weeks later, we added "bubbles," "open," and "chip" and he got
those almost immediately.
He'd had experience with PECS in his autism-only preschool, but had
no experience with signing. Now, he's fiddling with his hands all
the time, trying to make them ask for things. It's great. Leslie
calls that "practicing." He's drunk with power, being able to ask
for things and get them whenever he wants. And he loves to see his
therapists arrive every day now. He's been liberated from his
therapy room and everything about our household has been changed.
It's been the hardest on me, because he used to be tucked up in his
therapy room for the majority of the day with a habilitator. Now,
he's all over the place and his little sister (typical 2.8 year old)
and I have no peace anymore. I can't get anything done and really
don't like it much at all, but the results speak for themselves.
In Arizona, habilitation, OT, SpT, music are all paid for by the
state for kids with autism. It's great, and we had been spending
all of our money in the biomedical arena, content that our
behavioral program was as good as it could be. Then, a couple of
Phoenix families told us about AVB and after I went to hear Vince
Carbone I realized that it would be worth it to channel some money

Social skills curriculum

2008-10-25 09:36:33

I am seeking information for recommendations for a social skills curriculum.
I find myself in an unique position of recommending a social skills
curriculum to the teacher for my 10 year-old son. This curriculum is for a
child
with autism and is moderately affected. I would very much like to hear about a
curriculum or specific strategies that have been effective in teaching your
children.
I apologize for the cross posts. However, I would appreciate as much input
as I can get. Thank you all in advance for any and all input.
Warm regards,
Mary

OCD

2008-10-21 14:28:04

Hi,
Just read the post about OCD and I"m jumping in a bit late. I know this is
an ABA board (The best one on the net I might add) but my son recently was
diagnosed with a STREP infection. He also was found to have a strep
imbalance in his stool test. There is a disorder called PANDAS (Pediatric
Autoimmune Neurological Disorder Associated with Strep) whose symptoms
include sudden onset of severe OCD and aggressive behaviors. As the levels
in the body go up and down the behaviors can wax and wane (wain?). Just
thought I'd throw this out there. If untreated it can lead to heart
problems and other nasty things. Sorry for the somewhat off topic post but
wanted to share what we are seeing in this regard as my son has had a
dramatic change in behavior and a severe regression that came on out of
nowhere and has correlated with finding these things out by way of medical
testing. I completely agree with a behavioral approach to treating our kids
but am also finding that sometimes the antecedant can come from within and
can be unseen unless specifically explored. But I'm jumping in late and
haven't closely followed the discussion so I apologize if this is in no way
applicable.

implementation of ABA in a school setting

2008-10-21 09:33:17

I am looking for a plan for implementation of ABA based teaching in a school
setting. The autism specific classroom is 4 children (4-6 years old) a
teacher and a paraprofessional. None of the instructional staff have any ABA
experience.
Specific questions:
Length of initial training workshop (didactic)
Hours of supervision of staff working with a student initially and over the
school year
Inclusion of other school personnel in training (SLP,OT, APE, Regular Ed
teacher)
How training is implemented prior to the next school year for previously
untrained personnel (assume none are already trained)?
Thanks,
Mary Elizabeth

OCD

2008-10-21 05:45:13

The only thing I would add to the valuable insight Robert has provided is
that you need to also look at the issue of control holistically:
1. Ensure you are providing the child control in his everyday life where it
is developmentally appropriate. Typical developing children look for
independence during the school age years and try to exert control over their
life and environments, so our kids will too.
2. Focus on building competency in skills that are relevant to the child.
Building relevant competencies will build his confidence and fundamentally
increase your value as instructor to the child. Ask the child what they
want to learn--you might get an interesting answer that reflects what's
important to them.
3. Give the child choices. Where possible, give the child as many choices
as possible. Make the choices real and emphasize the ability of making good
choices. There can be choice around which programs and the order during the
lesson. There can even be choice around which stimuli.
Finally, our experience with OCD-like behaviors (rigidity, motor and verbal
repetitions) was that stress plays a large part. Look at the environmental
demands and explore ways of easing stress. For lot's of children with
autism, the awareness brings about confusion. The behaviors are only a clue
as to what's happening on the inside.
Best of luck, Dina

intensive teaching and video problem

2008-10-19 15:44:20

Hi everyone:
I'm new for this group and we just got VB consultant and stated in
home VB program. Before that I teached my son signs for manding in
natural enviroments. But it's hard to teach him imitation skills and
receptive language skills in the natural enviroment. Our consult
helped us set up intensive teaching seesion on the table and using my
son's favorite video as reinforcer.
Now our problem is: after I paused video, my son immediately signed
video for me and I didn't have chance to teach him new skills. Even I
caught some opportunity to do some trials, he just kept signing video
for me and didn't pay attention to my instructions at all. So the
video kindly distracted him from following my instructions, it worked
more likely as distraction to follow my command than reinforcer.
Before I also used some reinforcers to ask him work for some trial
such as some motor imitation and manding before giving him reinforcer.
But he became upset very soon and would threw the reinforcer on the
floor and didn't want to reach them for a long time. Only pacifer and
video are consistant reinforcers. But if he saw the two them he will
immediately mand them and I can't introduce any new trials.
So my question is: what's suggestions for reinforcers to be used
during intensive teaching? Before we use food, favorite toys as
reinforcers, but my son became very upset soon. Now we use video as
reinforcer but it seems distract him to follow my instructions.
Thanks a lot for any inputs.

Newbie Intro and question

2008-10-19 01:22:58

Hello, I am brand new to this board. I have a ds who is 4 (will be 5
in Feb) diagnosed with mild autism. He is "verbal" but not
conversational by any stretch of the imagination. He has vestibular,
proprioceptive, visual, and auditory sensory issues. All but
auditory are hyposensitive. Auditory sensitivity is only in response
to extra loud noises (choirs, loud trucks, loud toilets flushing etc)
however, there are some sounds he insists on hearing again and again
(certain parts of movies or songs, flushing our toilet at home,
dropping certain toys, etc). He is receiving speech therapy,
occupational therapy, ABA, and meets once a week with our schools
early childhood special ed teacher (will be switched to the autism
specialist at the school staring in August). His expressive and
receptive language are at about a 2yo level.
Here's my question...I have many, but this is the most pressing. The
teachers he has at church are at a loss as to how to deal with him in
class. So, after talking with our director of children's ministries,
I have offered to hold a meeting/session to talk to 'teach' these
adults basic info on autism, specific info on my son, and anything
else they may ask. Any suggestions on what I can do? Handouts,
videos, etc?
Thank you.

PICA- behavior plans

2008-10-18 20:50:33

Has anyone had any experience with a child who displays signs of PICA

2008-10-18 01:34:14

Questions regarding Sonrise programs

2008-10-17 05:23:34

Hi,
I Work with children with autism (training sessions
and team supervision), and i'm starting to work with a
new family. One of their acquaintance has proposed
them to work with using Son-rise programs.
Because, some things really trouble me. example
:"joining in a child's repetitive and ritualistic
behaviors supplies the key to unlocking the mystery of
these behaviors and facilitates eye contact, social
development and the inclusion of others in play".
--
behavior will do any good...
As for myself, I work mainly using DTT and VB, I read
about sonrise on their website, but i would like to
have feedback from you out there who might give me
information about these sonrise programs. And as i
work/live in France, direct feedback is not really
available.
Thank you.

Motivation

2008-10-16 15:04:39

Hi,
You bring up an excellent point. Tom Caffrey is fantastic! As are all
involved in the Verbal Behavior Network! The things I have seen them do (on
video) is just amazing. Every time I see a video at one of their workshops
I just about cry when I see footage of "Jimmy" (the boy I believe you were
referring to) before and after. Pairing and Manding are SOOO important.
These things have the power to change a child's life when done correctly and
when demands are kept very low to start until a relationship has been
established.
Best,
Maryann

Motivation/Be Patient

2008-10-15 16:56:57

Tom McCaffrey talks about the boy who was doomed for a residential placement
before they found Dr. Carbone and proper reinforcement. I think Tom states that
for 5 or 8 weeks, for 6 hours a day the child's 1:1 therapist placed NO DEMANDS
and was only "a giver" . She would walk by and rub the child, drop a skittle,
wink at him across the room and low and behold the child started coming to her
and the WORLD SHIFTED!!!! That child never needed to leave home.
I agree with all the recent posts. Look for the child's reinforcer, don't take
away the stim toy, utilize it and then slowly.....slowly change the focus.
So many professionals feel stressed to make "immediate progress". Always
remember, it is a "marathon not a sprint".

NET lesson plans

2008-10-14 23:45:19

Hello!
I am a preschool ABA teacher. A consultant mentioned a website that
she had seen awhile ago that has NET lessons - how to derive social,
language, etc. experiences out of the lesson...but didn't remember what
site it was. I have tried to find it to no avail. Has anyone come
across this or a site like it? It would be a great tool to give to
staff involved in the students day and to help me in my lesson planning
to increase VB in each lesson. Thank you for any help!

Motivation

2008-10-14 15:52:24

Melissa,
Follow the child's lead at first and watch what he goes for .. an item is
generally not considered a reinforcer per say until it is proven to increase
the behavior that occurred prior to it's delivery. It is also a matter of
how MUCH does the child like this item/toy/edible. Will it stand the test
and become something he is willing to work to gain access to it?? Some
kids, the second you place the demand on them decide they don't like that
"thing" all that much. All kids need to eat/drink. But reinforcers should
be SOOO much more than edibles. I'd watch for what he likes to do and simply
go and interact with that item yourself ... making it MORE fun for him by
your interaction than what he can get without you there (IE, making silly
faces, sounds, noises, actions .. singing etc. with it .. and using it ways
he had not though of). Also bouncing, rough play, tickles etc .. things
that only YOU can provide can also help .. like lifting him up VERY HIGH ..
because he isn't able to do it himself, throwing him on a bed, etc etc.
Dr. Carbone talks about motivation alot. Every child is motivated for or by
someothing. The key is to have YOU be the one to supply it. Do not require
ANY demands at first .. just think pez dispenser and delivery all of his
favorite things to him constantly. If he walks away to something else ..
regroup and try again. Limit the amount of things in the environment that
he can gain access to on his own (sanitize the envirionment) and then YOU
can have something of interest .. he will have to come to you eventualy to
get it .. making YOU more valuable .. which is what you are trying to do ..
make YOURSELF the big green M & M (so you won't have to use them .. LOL)..
YOU must become the reinforcer. Hope this helps a bit. Im sure others will
have lots more and much more thorough info on how you can help this little
guy. Just at the start .. remember, no demands. You must be seen as a
GIVER of good things. Even if it is access to the TV or his favorite movie.
Mom could deprive him of these things until you arrive so that YOU are seen
as the one who makes the good stuff happen. Very important to form a
relationship first. The goal is to have him run TO you not AWAY.

New therapist available in New Jersey

2008-10-14 12:15:16

Hi, my name is Amber Langford. Since September 2005, I have been
an au pair for a 10 year old with autism in Brick, NJ. I have also
been attending trainings on ABA/VB with both Christina Burk
(christinaburk.com) and POAC of NJ (www.poac.net). I am very
interested in joining at least one team as a therapist in Brick or
surrounding areas. While I'll need ongoing training and supervision,
I'm very excited at the opportunity to learn. Please contact me at
AmberDLangford@... if you are interested. References include
Christina Burk and are available upon request. Thank you.

Hello all,
I am a speech therapist and new to this group. I need help with a child recently
diagnosed with autism (2 1/2 year old little boy, seen in the home). Although we
have not formally started an official behavioral program, his OT and I are doing
some simple simple behavior based intervention trials to see how he will do. Our
problem is that this child is motivated by nothing. He tunes in and out to us
throughout the session, really does not get frustrated much at all and could
care less about any and all reinforcers we have tried.
Anyone have any insight on this? We would truly appreciate the help!
Thanks,
Melissa

Request for Info/Resources in Chicago or Madison

2008-10-12 15:15:11

Listmates,
My husband and I have options to move to either Chicago or Madison, Wisconsin.
We need to know about the educational and financial assistance resources
available in the Chicago area, especially the West-Northwest-North suburbs and
in Madison. My son (8 Y/O) has been in a home-based ABA program for many years,
and we are now looking for good inclusion programs with support as well as
continuing an after-school ABA program. We lived in Chicago for many years and
are quite familiar with that area, but that was pre-autism. We know little
about Wisconsin, but hear good things. We are interested in both private and
public school options and your good or bad experiences if you care to share
them. We are especially interested in what areas to avoid. You can post
off-list if you prefer and we apologize for any cross-posting.

Looking for ABA therapist in Sarasota for over the holidays

2008-10-12 10:32:45

Hi There,
I was just wondering if parents or ABA therapists themselves living in
Sarasota, Florida may be able to contact me... We live outside of Toronto,
Canada, but will be travelling to Sarasota (Siesta Key) over the holidays
and I would love to find someone trained in ABA to work with my 10-year-old
son a bit while we're there. It would involve lots of swimming, playing on
the beach, walking along the shore and other fun stuff!
Many Thanks,

School District of Upper Moreland (PA)

2008-10-10 02:20:38

Hi,
I am trying to network with parents who have had their children
transition from the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit into the
School District of Upper Moreland...
My child will be turning 5 in the Spring and we will have the
Transition Meeting then. I am very nervous as of what to expect
(alternatives, options, etc.) and I was hoping to be able to talk to
other parents who have gone through this experience...
If you have or know anyone who has transitioned to this School
District PLEASE I would really appreciate your input....
Thank you!
