A percentage of children will make significant progress in ABA-based
intervention but nonetheless continue to struggle in the areas of
abstract language. Difficulty with this language and related skills
effects all aspects of higher order social, academic and cognitive
functioning.
Dr. Schnee and Ms. Melconian will present a treatment model which
addresses advanced programming at higher levels. The model is
designedto help students integrate the vast bits of information
acquired during their programming so that new relations and 'meaning'
emerge. Through these new relations our students become fluent
conversationalists, speculators, and good perspective takers (good
at Theory of Mind).and we begin to see students achieving their
suspected potentials.

school based programs vs. home based programs

2008-11-20 09:47:21

I would like some information regarding the success rate of school
based programs vs home based programs. We live in the Charlotte, NC
area and have found a school that does aba/VB based classes and I was
wondering if there was a difference in the success rate of students in
the school settings or in a home setting. We are trying to decide
what would be best for our three year old that was diagnosed in
January. e are trying to find funding in order to start a home
program but have been unsucessful thus far. If any one has
information for a consultant that does VB based aba programs in my
area that information would be helpful as well.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Hi - I am in CT - have a 6 year old son on the
spectrum. He has been in an ABA based school program
since age 3. He goes all day.
I am noticing that this board is not very active for
having over 4,000 members.
I would love to hear about your impressions of how
ABA/VB are working out for you all, either in school
programs, home programs, or both. What kind of
successes are you having, and to what do you attrubute
these successes? What types of challenges do you
continue to face even with what you consider a high
quality ABA program? Are there other therapies you
are using to supplement ABA if you feel it is not
addressing everything your child needs?
Any of you have a child "come off the spectrum" with
ABA?
Trying to determine what is working out there!
Thanks,
Laura B.

memory skills (visual)

2008-11-19 00:58:59

one exercise that i do with my son involves printed out pictures of his fave
cartoon characters. i lay them down on the floor face up in a line. i
usually do four or five. i have him say each one as i point to it one time
and then i turn them over. he has to recall each one in order. but i dont
turn them over, instead i take the first one and move it to the end of the
line and now he has to repeat the whole process...i point to the first
picture in the line (which was previously the second picture in the line)
and he has to say which one it is and then i go down the line and now the
last one in the line was previously the first one in line. then i do it
again with the next picture...i repeat this four or five times and then i
turn them over. he picked this up rather surprisingly quickly. weve done up
to six characters in a line with about five movements. i also arrange them
in triangles and squares and change up the pattern of movement. (my son just
turned six and has autism). phil
